With his art, the Spanish gitano and artist Manolo Gómez Romero has found an adequate pictorial expression for flamenco and thus expanded this culture with a new facet of abstract art. The winner of the Premio de la Cultura Gitana 2012 succeeds in congenially realising the enigmatic duende state of flamenco in painting.
The works of the self-taught artist Manolo Gómez, although mostly formally abstract, are an expression of his own way of depicting his attitude to life and his surroundings. Sometimes, says the artist, they show what it means to be a Gitano. They are an attempt to depict the ancient emotions of Spanish Gitano culture in a contemporary way through vibrations, abstract expression and dynamic colour schemes, such as the inexplicable state of duende between the audience and artists during flamenco. Gómez’s works have therefore rightly been compared to the quejío, the special song of cante flamenco, which is reminiscent of a cry.
