Nihad Nino Pušija

Born in Sarajevo (Bosnia and Herzegovina) in 1965, he studied political science and journalism at the University of Sarajevo. At the same time, he worked as a photojournalist and artist and has been working as a freelance photographer in various art photography projects and photo studies in Italy, Belgium, England and the USA since 1988. Pušija has been realising projects in Berlin since 1992, including for the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg Cultural Office, the Neue Gesellschaft für Bildende Kunst, the Museum of European Cultures and the Allianz Cultural Foundation. His work reflects the personal stories of the people he meets. He immerses himself in the microcosm of urban life and shows timeless documents of a society. With his view of society, he refers to different ethnic and cultural influences and looks behind the facades of cities. In his pictures, he captures everyday and fleeting situations and thus shows the fragility and transience of life. Pušija has been working on the Roma in Europe cycle since 1994. A first extensive series on this topic was created in 1996-97, during the realisation of the project Duldung at the Neue Gesellschaft für Bildende Kunst, which photographically accompanied the exile situation of five Bosnian Roma families in Berlin. Further photo series followed, e.g. in 2005, during a field research assignment for the Museum of European Cultures, Berlin. For this, Pušija travelled for several months to the successor states of the former Yugoslavia: to Slovenia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro and Kosovo, in order to document the living situation of the Roma on site in a reportage. Pušija lives and works in Berlin.
