LA FINESSE . GODI – ŚUZIPE – ZOR. An insight into the Kai Dikhas collection

While we are currently receiving catastrophic news from all directions—news that, upon the briefest reflection, quickly leads to brooding and to the brink of apocalyptic dimensions—art can and must intervene with commitment and call for changes in our actions and ways of life. It can shake us awake, give expression to pain and despair, make grievances visible, and lend the proper darkness to the depths of the abysses opening before us.Members of the Sinti and Roma are, in a certain way, accustomed to a particular external pressure: exclusion, racist attacks up to and including the genocide committed by the National Socialists, the Holocaust; poverty and hunger, flight, expulsion, deportations. These are experiences that many members know all too well. At Kai Dikhas, we have already spoken about the fact that there is no clearly identifiable “Roma art” in an aesthetic sense; rather, it is—especially given the internationality and diversity of the artists—these shared experiences that all artists connected with the Kai Dikhas Foundation hold in common. A common denominator. When looking at the Kai Dikhas collection, one notices that the artworks are often distinguished by a particular elegance and intelligence. They contain all of the above, yet they also speak of resilience; art becomes a means of self-assertion, of defense, and it lends a radiance to the beauty of the people—one that, even within the act of indictment, preserves the hope for another world, the one envisioned by the artists.

In Romanes: Godi – the spirit. Śuzipe – the beauty. Zor – the strength.

Over the years, through our exhibition activities, an extensive and unique art collection has emerged, documenting the work of Kai Dikhas. The exhibition presents a selection of earlier as well as brand-new acquisitions of the Foundation.
