Tamara Moyzes is an artist, curator and documentary filmmaker. (Born 1975) in Bratislava, Slovak Republic, lives and works in Prague, Czech Republic. Doctoral student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. (2005) Graduate of the Department of New Media at the Prague Academy of Fine Arts.
Tamara Moyzes is a politically engaged artist who deals with issues such as gender, racism, antiziganism, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, discrimination against ethnic minorities, questions of nationalism and religious conflicts, and – as a curator – Orientalism, and has long been committed to artistic activism. She believes that art is a form of protest that should expose social conditions through direct artistic intervention. Using irony, satire and the visualisation of lived experience, Moyzes aims to expose social injustices. Tamara Moyzes’ artistic practice is rooted in her Hungarian, Jewish and Roma origins and in her life spent in Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Israel, and works from the perspective of the intersection of minorities.
Moyzes founded the group ‘Romane Kale Panthera / Romani Black Panthers’ (2012), which organises events on the border between political art and activism, and founded the ‘Artivist Lab’ gallery (2018) as part of her doctoral studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. The gallery is a joint project of Prague City Hall and Charles University.
Moyzes is represented in various international publications, including ‘Art and Theory of Post-1989 Central and Eastern Europe: A Critical Anthology’, published by MoMA (2019).
Winner of the AVU Research Grant Competition (2018), EGOART AWARD (2004), nominated for the WRO International Media Art Biennial Award (2005). Artistic resident of LowRes-Art Cube Artists (Jerusalem), ARTPORT (Tel Aviv), Villa Waldberta (Munich), the Goethe-Institut (Berlin), INI Project (Prague), POLIN Museum (Warsaw), Gallery 8 (Budapest)
Tamara Moyzes is part of Secondary Archive, a project initiated and coordinated by the Katarzyna Kozyra Foundation, a platform for female artists from Central and Eastern Europe.
