Roma Resistance Day: Artist Talk and Screening with Alfred Ullrich.

On May 16 at 7 PM, the Foundation Kai Dikhas will proudly commemorate Roma Resistance Day, a day dedicated to honoring the resilience and resistance of the Roma community against oppression and discrimination. This significant event will feature an artist talk and screening with renowned Sinto artist Alfred Ullrich, whose work has continuously challenged societal perceptions and highlighted the struggles of the Roma and Sinti people.

Alfred Ullrich, born in 1948 in Schwabmünchen, Germany, has dedicated his artistic career to confronting historical injustices and exploring themes of identity, memory, and trauma. His work, deeply influenced by his own family’s history—his mother being a Holocaust survivor—aims to reveal and critique the prevailing narratives surrounding Roma and Sinti communities. His diverse artistic practice includes printmaking, installations, and performances, all of which serve as powerful statements against exclusion and marginalization.Ullrich’s work is often characterized by its raw, expressive visual language, utilizing techniques such as etching and monotype printing to convey historical and contemporary struggles. He often integrates text fragments into his photos and installations, evoking a dialogue between memory and present-day discrimination.

This event will also establish a meaningful connection with our ongoing exhibition RʳOMA LEPANTO, in which Alfred Ullrich is a participating artist. The exhibition delves into historical and contemporary perspectives on Roma identity, migration, and cultural expression. RʳOMA LEPANTO challenges dominant historical narratives and amplifies the voices of Roma artists who continue to redefine the discourse surrounding their heritage and rights. This is precisely the aim and significance of the Day of Roma Resistance, which is why we are holding this artist talk on this occasion.

Event: 16. May – 7pm till 9pm

Place: The event begins with a guided tour of the exhibition RʳOMA LEPANTO at the Kai Dikhas Foundation, Prinzenstr. 84.2, 10969 Berlin.

The artist talk and screening will then take place in the “tak village” at Oranienhof, the inner courtyard of the Aufbau Haus.
